Well it isn't quite as bad as that because eventually the pvops
support in the upstream Linux kernel should allow the normal Ubuntu
kernel to function in a Xen domU. They have just been a bit too
quick (IMHO) in going that way.

I don't think there is much point in speculating about what things
will be like in 2013, or even 2011 as regards to Linux
virtualisation other than that I'm sure it will still be going
strong in one form or another. I don't know if Bitfolk will still
be using Xen then, or if KVM or other technologies will be in use.

The release of the next LTS in 2010 will indeed be the interesting
time.
